It's normal for a puppy to need time and training to feel comfortable sleeping alone during the night. Leaving your puppy alone at night or during bedtime can be dangerous. Puppies aren't used to sleeping alone. Since they were born, they have most likely been sleeping next to their mother and other puppies in their litter.
It can be traumatic for them to learn to sleep alone in their own beds. The best way to keep them safe and in their own bed is to have them spend their first nights at home in a box that physically limits their movement and helps with potty training. If you take the time to create a comfortable sleeping configuration for your puppy and to train them patiently, your new pet will soon learn to enjoy a good night's rest. If you are planning to train your puppy in cages, you should definitely keep them in your room until they are properly cage trained, puppies tend to whine and bark in the cage for the first few weeks and need comfort.
On this first night, be prepared for very little sleep and a little heartbreak, as the puppy will probably feel lonely and there will almost definitely be whining. Turning on soft music can help calm your puppy to sleep, as well as doing the double task of masking other sounds that could wake him up. Keeping track of your puppy's potty can really help you determine your puppy's natural potty schedule, which can help you adjust feeding times to increase sleep time at night. Below are some of my favorite techniques for helping your pup settle down and the must-haves for establishing a quiet sleeping area and helping calm him to a pleasant sleep.
What is not so good is letting the puppy sleep in bed with you, it is strongly recommended that he sleep in his bed or in a cage. Puppies often don't know how to regulate their alcohol consumption, and if they drink until bedtime, you'll definitely have to take the puppy out during the night. For your puppy to sleep in their own bed, start by getting a cage that is large enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around and lie down. The kennel or dog bed should be in a safe place, and it's important to make sure to protect a puppy proof area at least until the puppy is ready to sleep outside the cage.
Some puppies do better with a full view of their surroundings, but I have found that most prefer a cage more like a den. We've had other puppies crying most of the first night with brief breaths (I'm looking at your Stetson). Your puppy should sleep in your room until 3 or 4 months, at this age most puppies are physically able to spend the night without going to the bathroom. He certainly loved cuddling up with him, and even after he went on to sleep out of the box once he was old enough, he still carried the Snuggle Puppy puppy around to use as a pillow, as can be seen in the inserted photo.
