Entries take approximately 18 business days from the date they are mailed to AKC to be processed and returned to the owner. Once the bed request has been processed, we issue dog registration requests. There should be no doubt as to the identity of an individual dog or as to the paternity of a particular dog or litter. Ask if the breeder is a member of an AKC affiliated club and contact that club to verify their membership or consult recent AKC litter listings available from breeders.
If the owners of your puppy's parents and grandparents were good joints who kept the chain intact by sending their own money, the AKC will add your puppy to the chain and send you a piece of paper with a number. The litter owner should thoroughly examine the kit for errors before handing over documents to puppy buyers. In the United States and Canada, there are no restrictions on the number of litters, but there is a restriction on the age of no more than 12 years. The litter kit will include an individual registration request for each puppy in the litter, as well as a form to keep a record.
