Should 6 week old puppies still be nursing?

Puppies can begin to wean at different ages, and at 6 weeks of age they can continue to breastfeed as an adjunct to eating dry foods. Most puppies will begin to wean on their own for a period of time, and the mother will usually begin to fully wean them around 8 weeks of age.

Puppies can begin to wean at different ages, and at 6 weeks of age they can continue to breastfeed as an adjunct to eating dry foods. Most puppies will begin to wean on their own for a period of time, and the mother will usually begin to fully wean them around 8 weeks of age. When do puppies stop breastfeeding? Puppies will breastfeed until they are approximately four weeks old and puppies should be fully weaned by six weeks of age. Maximum milk production will occur approximately three to five weeks after the puppies are born.

At this time, depending on breed and litter size, you may be eating up to four times your normal maintenance ration divided into four meals a day. An adequate amount of fluids is also essential, especially if you are on a dry diet. Make sure there is a plentiful supply of clean drinking water. You'll be amazed at how much they eat and drink while feeding their puppies.

Puppies will breastfeed until they are approximately four weeks old and puppies should be fully weaned by six weeks of age. Mothers will begin weaning their young over a period of time, gradually. Weaning is best for the mother and puppies because a mother will gradually dry out her milk supply, and the puppy's nutritional needs will begin to require real food. Along with some other rare situations, these are cases where the dog breeder must step in and take care of the entire litter of puppies.

If, for some reason, puppies do not breastfeed during this important period of time, their vaccinations should begin before six weeks of age, depending on possible exposure to the disease. In a first litter, the mother's delivery will be longer and there may be more interruption in breastfeeding of puppies that are born. If the mother does not stay in the farrowing box most of the time, the puppies' body temperature should be closely monitored. Puppies can be treated for worms starting at two weeks of age, but it is most common to treat them at three and six weeks of age.

If puppies are bottle-fed, after three weeks baby teeth will come out and they can start eating puppy food softened with water or formula. This type of mother is also known to kill her puppies, intentionally or inadvertently, presumably as a means of “protecting” them from danger. Breastfeeding puppies is a very sensitive topic and encompasses many concerns of dog owners and breeders. A graph of the amount of formula given to each puppy in the litter will increase the chances that all puppies will gain enough weight in those first two weeks.

Healthy six-week-old puppies don't need milk supplements, a good quality raw diet or commercial puppy food is enough. In nature, weaning begins naturally as soon as puppies begin to develop their teeth, usually at three to four weeks of age. Moving puppies from one place to another can put them at risk if placed in a cold or drafty place.
